A Tarot Reading Starts Before the Cards

Tarot cards, crystals and candle on a reading table

One of my favourite parts of a tarot reading happens before I turn over a single card.

It is the conversation. What has brought you here? What has been sitting at the back of your mind? What keeps coming up when you are alone with your thoughts?

You do not need the perfect question

You do not have to arrive with everything worked out. You do not even have to know exactly what you want to ask.

Sometimes the starting point is simply, “I feel that something is changing and I want to understand it.” That can be more than enough to begin.

The person comes first

For me, a reading is never just about turning over cards and giving a list of meanings. The conversation helps me understand what is relevant to the person sitting with me.

That is also why the cards I choose can vary from one reading to another.

The cards come into the conversation

Once we have talked about what you would like to explore, the cards give us something to work with. They bring symbols, themes and possibilities into the conversation.

Sometimes a card immediately makes sense. Sometimes it raises another question. Sometimes it shows something you had not considered before.

Before the first card is turned

A tarot reading starts with a person, not a deck.

The cards are part of the process, but so are the conversation, the questions and the things you are already carrying with you.

That is what makes each reading different.
