Will They Come Back? The Question Behind the Question

“Will they come back?” is one of those questions that carries a great deal of hope. Tarot can help you look at the relationship, but there is a difference between insight and certainty.

Person writing thoughtfully in a journal

“Will they come back?”

It is a small question with a surprisingly large amount of emotion behind it.

Usually, the person asking isn’t really asking about a calendar date. They are asking whether the story is finished.

And that is where tarot can become very interesting.

Tarot cannot make another person choose

Whatever you believe about tarot, another person’s choices remain their own.

A card cannot force somebody to call, return, apologise or fall in love. People are wonderfully inconvenient creatures. They change their minds. They become frightened. They meet somebody else. They return when you have finally stopped waiting.

Life is not especially tidy.

So what can a reading explore?

A tarot reading can look at the relationship as it stands now. What patterns are present? What seems unfinished? What are you holding on to? What might be getting in the way of communication?

Sometimes the cards suggest movement. Sometimes they suggest distance. Sometimes they show that the real issue isn’t whether somebody returns, but what would happen if they did.

That last question is often overlooked.

Suppose they do come back

Imagine the message arrives tomorrow.

“Hi. I’ve been thinking about you.”

Lovely.

Now what?

Would the same problems still be there? Would anything actually be different? Would you want the relationship as it was, or are you hoping for the relationship you wished it could have been?

Those are much more useful questions than staring at your phone and trying to interpret the last message.

Hope has a habit of editing the past

When we miss someone, memory can become selective.

We remember the good conversation, the laugh, the feeling of being wanted. We conveniently forget the argument that lasted three days or the reason things fell apart in the first place.

A reading can sometimes bring the whole picture back into view.

The cards don’t have to give you the answer

Sometimes they give you a better question.

That may sound less exciting, but it can be far more useful.

If you are waiting for someone to return, ask what you need to know about the situation now. Ask what you can learn from it. Ask what would need to change for a reunion to be healthy.

And, perhaps most importantly, ask what your life looks like if you stop waiting.

That is where your choice begins.

If this is a question that has been following you around, you can explore it in a personal Mystic Monkey reading.
