What Does the Moon Card Mean in Tarot?

The Moon is one of tarot’s most misunderstood cards. It can speak of uncertainty, intuition, fear and things that are not yet clear.

Tarot cards and candlelight in a dark mystical setting

The Moon is a beautiful card.

It is also slightly unnerving.

There is a path disappearing into the distance, strange creatures watching from either side and that enormous moon hanging above the whole scene. Nothing about it says, “Don’t worry, everything is perfectly straightforward.”

And perhaps that is the point.

The Moon lives in uncertainty

The Moon often appears when you don’t have the whole story.

You may be waiting for an answer. You may suspect something but cannot prove it. Or you may simply be trying to make a decision while your emotions are making rather a lot of noise.

It is a card of uncertainty, but uncertainty is not the same thing as disaster.

Sometimes fear fills in the blanks

Our minds dislike empty spaces.

If someone doesn’t reply, we invent a reason. If a plan changes, we imagine what might go wrong. If we cannot see what is around the corner, we tend to assume we should be worried about it.

The Moon can be a gentle reminder to distinguish between what you know and what you fear.

And then there is intuition

The Moon isn’t only about confusion.

It can also point towards instinct, dreams and the quieter things we notice before we can explain them.

That doesn’t mean every uneasy feeling is a prophecy. Sometimes your intuition notices something real. Sometimes anxiety simply rings the alarm bell because it has nothing better to do.

Learning the difference takes time.

In a love reading

The Moon can suggest mixed signals, uncertainty or feelings that have not been spoken aloud.

It can also describe your own uncertainty about a relationship. You may be trying to work out what somebody else feels when the more immediate question is what you feel yourself.

The useful question

If the Moon appears, try asking:

What do I actually know, and what am I filling in for myself?

That is a very Moon-like question.

And sometimes, once you ask it, the path ahead becomes a little easier to see.

If you have a situation that feels unclear, you can explore it in a Mystic Monkey reading.
