Why Do I Keep Pulling the Same Tarot Card?

If the same tarot card keeps appearing, it can feel as though the deck is trying to get your attention. There are several ways to look at it, and not all of them require a supernatural explanation.

Person writing thoughtfully in a journal

There is something rather curious about pulling the same tarot card again and again.

You shuffle. You cut the deck. You lay the cards down. And there it is, staring back at you like an old acquaintance who has decided you haven’t quite understood the conversation.

So, what does it mean?

Perhaps the card has something to say

The simplest way to approach a repeated card is also one of the most useful. Ask yourself what the card represents in your life at the moment.

Tarot cards are full of symbols, characters and situations that can be interpreted in many different ways. The same card can mean one thing in a reading about work and something quite different in a reading about love.

If the same card keeps appearing, it may be worth stopping for a moment rather than immediately pulling another card.

What caught your attention? The image? The story? Something you felt when you turned it over?

The subconscious is an interesting thing

We notice more than we realise. We also tend to return to the same questions when something in our lives remains unresolved.

That is one reason tarot can feel strangely personal. The cards give us images to think about. We bring our own experiences to those images, and sometimes the connection is surprisingly clear.

Imagine you keep pulling the Eight of Cups. You might think, “Ah, something is telling me to leave.” Perhaps. But another question might be more revealing: What have I been thinking about leaving already?

That question puts the decision back where it belongs, with you.

And then there is chance

We should not forget the obvious explanation. A tarot deck is a collection of cards. If you use it regularly, repetition is going to happen.

But chance does not necessarily make the experience meaningless. Sometimes a coincidence is simply an invitation to look more closely at what has your attention.

Before you pull another card

Next time a familiar card appears, don’t rush to escape it.

Look at the picture. Read the traditional meaning if you want to. Then ask yourself a rather more interesting question:

Why might this card be bothering, comforting or intriguing me today?

You may discover that the card isn’t predicting anything at all. It may simply be holding up a mirror.

And occasionally, that is enough.
